Mr. Holmes is primarily involved in business transactions with a focus on commercial and residential real estate. He has broad experience in the acquisition, development, leasing, sale, finance and obtaining of entitlements for real estate of all types, including raw land. He has also been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®, in the Real Estate Law category. Some larger projects he has worked on include: development of several large-scale (1500+ acres) planned unit developments; the development, leasing and management of a 157 acre commercial complex with national and big box tenants; a $27 million joint venture for an apartment development; the sale and purchase of commercial buildings, including a 50,000 square foot downtown office tower, a 500,000 square foot industrial complex, a 300,000 square foot retail shopping center, and several golf courses; financing and refinancing of a $54.5 million acquisition for a commercial project in Raleigh, North Carolina; the workout and unwind of a synthetic lease structure for a major headquarters building; and the development of a 1,000-megawatt natural gas-fired co-generation power plant.
He is currently involved in real estate projects throughout North Carolina, with a focus on New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender and surrounding counties. He also has extensive experience with local land use issues, including public hearings for rezoning and special use proceedings. He has represented clients in the sale and purchase of both raw land and previously improved property, the completion of mortgage loans and secured credit facilities, the leasing of office, retail, industrial and general commercial space, and the development of commercial and residential property, including subdivisions and condominiums. He has also worked with developers and homeowners’ associations in regard to community covenants and amendments, transition issues, and resolution of disputes. Prior to joining Murchison, Taylor & Gibson, PLLC, Mr. Holmes practiced commercial real estate law at large firms located in downtown Houston, Texas and Chicago, Illinois.
